Genetics - Possibly a Cause of Childhood Obesity

The reasons for a child developing childhood obesity are numerous. This brief article will explore the possibility of a child’s genes being responsible for “inheriting” the debilitating condition of childhood obesity.

Earlier research efforts have formed opinions that adult body-mass index (BMI) is 55 percent to 85 percent inheritable.[1] Genes in the spectrum of 15q11?13 could be abnormally suggestive as the end result of possibly a structural or functional abnormality in this chromosomal spectrum. At this date the definitive genetic reasons have not yet been specificly identified, and the genetic lesion(s) seem to relate to hypothalamic dysfunction.[2]

However, observations of the explosion of the visually definitive prevalence of childhood obesity in first world nations clearly demonstrates genetics should not considered as a predominant reason for the current increase that has been noted in recent experience. [3] Genetic syndromes where obesity is thought to be a major fact are extremely unique. In addition, these invariably have a linked significant physical abnormality as well as mental deterioration.

Dysmorphic syndromes, known as Turner’s and Beckwith-Wiedemann, are invariably specified in early childhood development.[4]

Considerable research projects reason that genetics may possibly help to explain a child’s desire for selective foods, such as sweet foods as opposed to foods with a savoury or salty taste. A genetic preference to sweet tasting foods would certainly entice a child so genetically disposed to have a preference to desire inappropriate amounts of sweet tasting foods such as sweets, and sugar saturated bottled drinks. [5]

Further research into the impact of genes on childhood obesity may also assist to understand why a child demands fast food outlet bought ham-burgers, fish and chips, or other fast foods, in preference to home-cooked meals . On the one hand this problem may simply be due to the reluctance of the modern parent to devote time and effort in preparing a healthy home cooked meal, in preference to giving in to a child’s desire for food from a fast food outlet due to the fact that most parent’s are in the workforce?
