All us guys and gals over fifty, and that’s not really over the hill, (is it?), would like to think that by age post 50 we know enough to enjoy healthy nutritional diets….wouldn’t we? Well the bad news is that most of us probably dont have a clue about maintaining a healthy state of nutrition…no matter how old we are!
I am the wrong side of fifty and am very aware that the aging bod requires special care, plenty of excercise and plenty of the right nutrition if I wish to feel well and healthy. Here’s a number of of strategies to assist you to remain nutritionally healthy post 50:
1. Decrease that alcohol intake. Most of us enjoy the occasional red or white wine, and I enjoy the odd beer. However too much of an enjoyable consumption of alcoholic drinks will negate the other good things you take.
2. Dont add extra salt to your meals. Salt is without doubt a great flavour enhancer. However it is also a great enhancer of increased blood pressure and other associated nasties.
3. Various fats are essential to proper nutrition. However the wrong fats will cause health problems down the life track. Check out what fats are good for you and which ones are deadly!
4. Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink. Fortunately there is plenty of water readily available to most of us. Your body needs lots of water replacement. Proper health and nutrition requires that you drink a couple of litres a day…at least.
5. Consume a wide variety of food intake each day. Ensure you enjoy a wide variety of vegies each day with your meals.
6. Ensure that you eat plenty of high calcium content food daily…especially the Gals.
7. Consult with your doctor as to a recommended course of vitamin and mineral supplements to take daily. Our modern mass methods of growing vegies, etc; may not provide your body with the required levels of vitamins and minerals for healthy nutrition.
8. Enjoy a diet containing increased low and medium density carbohydrates as compared with high density carbohydrates.
9. And for us over fifties the recommendation is to enjoy five or six small meals a day as opposed to the conventional three meals a day we have become used to during our past fifty years…plus
